Gonaives was founded in 1422 by the native inhabitants of the region who named the village "Gonaibo".

  • Gonaïves is referred to as Haiti's City of Independence. It was here that Haiti was declared independent from France on January 1, 1804.
  • Gonaives is an area known for its farming and agricultural industry, with its most common crops being cotton, sugar, coffee, mango, banana and cabinet wood.
  • People in Gonaives celebrate the anniversary of the city every 4th of November with a feast celebrating Saint Charles Borromeo, the catholic patron saint of the city.
