- Gonaives is located on the northeastern coast of the island.
- It is the capital and the most populated city of the Arbonite Department of Haiti.
- Gonaives has a local steppe climate, with dry, grassy, arid plains.
- Gonaïves is referred to as Haiti's City of Independence. It was here that Haiti was declared independent from France on January 1, 1804.
