DESCRIPTION
- Plaisance is a commune in the department of Nord.
- A commune is roughly the equivalent to a township or municipality, and a department is the first of four levels of government. Haiti has 10 departments and 145 communes.
- Plaisance is a mountainous region renown for its natural beauty including its many rivers, caves, and waterfalls, yet it remains a remote destination due to its challenging infrastructure.
- Because of its isolation, it was the perfect refuge for escaped slaves during the Haitian Revolution.
- Historically, buccaneers, or pirates off the Spanish-American coast, lived here in large numbers hunting and raising wild pigs and oxen.
- The main economic activities in this region include agriculture and trade. People often make a living by raising subsistence crops.
- Depots, shops, building materials and food supply centers form the main commercial establishments.
