"I decided to join Move Across May because it takes a village to bring positive changes into the world..and we are just small seeds who wants to see everyone win in life."
This is Irene. She is very resourceful, and is the mother of everyone in the community. She sells bread and coffee that many people in the community buy for breakfast. Irène is undoubtedly the best-known person in the community. The investment we provided to her enabled her to open a second business selling men's and women's underwear and school supplies. She is renowned for her generosity, often allowing parents to buy school supplies on credit so they can send their children to school.
“I chose to do this business to make it easier for people to find things to put in their tummies and those of their children, and to find items to dress them properly to send them to school. I also sell other school items to them at very affordable prices.” says Irène about her business. It's easy to see why the whole community calls her "Manman Irene" (Mother Irene).
Your support will enable Manman Irene to keep providing for the community and for other families to receive small business investments.
In 2021, Renel started our Workforce Development Program as a very active participant fueled with the commitment to provide for his wife and their six children. Renel is not just a responsible family man, but also a shining example of resilience and determination for an entire community.
“From the moment he joined our program, he displayed an eagerness to learn and a genuine willingness to help the other participants progress as well.” said our WorkForce Development Coordinator, Armelie, recalling the days when Renel joined the program.
Renel took every lesson to heart, and utilized the investment we provided to start his own store. He started small, but in no time his store became one of the most reliable in the community providing mainly food supplies and hygiene products to his neighbors. Unfortunately, last November his storefront was broken into and he lost a significant amount of his inventory. Despite this major setback, Renel refused to give up. With what little he had left and the meager funds he was able to spare, he returned to work. “I am not sure when we will get back to a more peaceful situation. I could not allow myself to wait for too long because I have a family to take care of. We must continue to live despite the hardships.” said Renel bravely, when questioned about what motivates him to keep working hard despite the current situation of Haiti.
Renel’s journey does not end there. He has now become a Community Leader, eagerly participating in this newly developed program to provide assistance to other families in the community. Due to current insecurity and roadblocks, our WORK team in Haiti is unable to directly reach the community, making Renel’s role even more crucial. By bridging the communication gap between the families and our organization, he ensures that our assistance continues to reach those in need.
Renel’s unwavering commitment to applying the knowledge he gained from our program is a testament to his strength and resilience, and his transformation from a humble participant to a valuable contributor is an inspiration to us all.
Roseline is part of our first cohort of families in Truitier participating in the small business program. Initially, her only source of income came from selling chicken on Sundays near the landfill, where she earned about 1,000 gourdes each week. The situation was not ideal for her since she did not have the proper space to stock the meat, so there were weeks that she huge stocks if she not sell everything. In 2022 afte completing our Small Business Program (SBP), she pitched her business idea to us and received her first investment to open a small store (boutik) in her neighborhood. Since then, despite facing various challenges, she has made significant progress and now has inventory valued at 40,000 HTG. Roseline is now prepared for a second investment to further grow her business and will continue to receive mentoring as she pursues that expansion.
"I'm so happy this program exists because it's helping my business thrive, allowing me to provide for my kids and manage my finances better. I'm grateful to the organization for lifting me up from a very difficult place and supporting me in building a better future. Besides my heavenly God, I credit much of my progress over the years to WORK, it's supporters and the Small Business Program." - Roseline
