HISTORY
The city of Port au Prince was officially incorporated in 1749 and in 1770 it replaced Cap-Haitien as the capital of the French colony of Saint-Domingue.

DESCRIPTION
  • Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti and where Menelas is located, is situated on the Gulf of Gonâve: the bay on which the city lies, which acts as a natural harbor and has sustained economic activity.
  • The city's layout is similar to that of an amphitheatre; commercial districts are near the water, while residential neighborhoods are located on the hills above.
FUN FACTS
  • Port-au-Prince is one of the nation's largest centers of economy and finance. The capital currently exports its most widely consumed produce of coffee and sugar.
  • Being a metropolis, it is home to many museums, art galleries and sights, including the Barbancourt Rum DIstillery, Musée du Panthéon National History Museum, Hotel Oloffson, and Fort Jacques.
  • Port au Prince is considered the educational hub of Haiti as it has several different educational institutions which range from large universities to smaller vocational schools. The State University of Haiti is also located in Port au Prince.
