Run Across May Runner Profiles: Simi Shetty

My name is Simi Shetty, and I’ve been interning with WORK this summer as a PR Intern. I first got involved with WORK back in high school, when I had the privilege of going to Haiti twice with my school. The experience was unforgettable. I learned so much about the non-profit sector, the history and culture of Haiti, and most importantly, I found such loving, passionate people fiercely dedicated to the community they accompany out of poverty. I remain inspired by the WORK community and their families in Haiti and am constantly blown away by their commitment to each other.

Let me introduce myself! I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA and like I mentioned before, connected with WORK a couple years ago when I was in high school. Currently, I am a rising third year student at the University of Georgia, majoring in Public Relations and double minoring in General Business and Spanish. Back in the spring, I reconnected with Viv and Christina to see if there was a PR or marketing related opportunity for me to get involved with this summer. Lo and behold, they had a great project for me to start, and that is how this blog series came to be!

I spent the summer interviewing 2021 Run Across May participants to highlight supporter stories. Working alongside the wonderful Nelly Alonso, Engagement Manager for the Run Series, we spoke to several supporters discussing their involvement, passions, and lives. From these interviews Nelly and I conducted, I wrote content, mostly in blog format, telling these stories of our supporters. I learned so much from their stories, and even got the opportunity to reflect on my own experience and involvement with WORK. I loved being able to tell our supporters’ stories because at the end of the day, they are the ones who make so much of our work possible.

It’s been an amazing summer, coming back to WORK and being able to see so many familiar faces and to meet so many new ones. This organization will always have a special place in my heart, and I am so lucky to have been able to give back and create something for them. I hope everybody enjoys the blog series, and a huge thanks to those I interviewed! Thank you for taking the time to meet with us, thank you for trusting me with your words, and thank you for the incredible insight into your story and life!
